If you have an "I" style or Influencer style boss (based on the Disc Assessment Tool) how do you best communicate with them?
What is the focus of an Influencer style boss? POSITIVE INTERACTIONS. That's right. A typical I-style boss is generally outgoing, talkative, people-oriented and energetic in their mannerisms. So, how to get along with this style of boss?
What to Expect
Assignments may arise or shift quickly and spontaneously from new inspiration.
Expect a casual approach to assignment communication.
Discussions are animated and enthusiastic.
Assignments often lack specific deadlines.
Expect flexibility and little formal structure.
The work pace is quick, with rapid changes.
The focus is on creativity and building alliances, rather than a detailed plan.
For example
"Hey Marnie, I wanted to let you know that the report you created has been incredibly useful in pinpointing our best-selling products. Could you please identify our three least profitable products and provide some cost-effective solutions as soon as you can? I think this information would be very useful to our marketing department. Thanks!"
How to respond to an "I" Style Boss
Tips
Express pleasure at hearing from them.
Validate their feelings.
Let them know you're looking forward to working with them and solving the change or embracing the opportunity.
Project positivity and optimism in your interactions.
Show interest in and take time to listen to their thoughts, ideas and stories.
For example
"Thanks Marc! So glad to hear the report is what you were looking for - and sure, I can move a few things around in my schedule so I can get started on this today. I can see why the marketing department would like this information ASAP. I'll provide you an update by noon tomorrow. Stay tuned."
What you gain by communicating with your I-Boss in this manner
You validate their ideas and show that you heard them and understand the instructions.
You show enthusiasm for the project.
Your I-Boss typically doesn't set a deadline and so you are stating when you will have it done so there is no ambiguity. If the I-Boss doesn't like your deadline they can clarify with you.
You show that you are on the same page by speaking in a manner that your I-Boss understands and appreciates (The Platimum Rule of Disc: Do unto others they way THEY would like or need you to).
If your Boss is an "I" Style, and you are a:
D: Let them talk. Build on their ideas but keep it brief.
I: Let them talk more than you do. Offer praise and encouragement.
S: Listen and tactfully refocus conversation as needed.
C: Offer to research resources and data to support their ideas.
And finally, consider this
When your boss is an I-Style, how can you be sure that you are adapting appropriately to create mutually beneficial and positive connections?
